"SPEAK OUT" assignment: speech

After reading so many pieces of editorials, it's your turn to voice out!

Assignment: Prepare a 1-2 minute speech to address and issue that you deeply care about and convince the class of your opinion.

Ask yourself the following:

1. What issue will I want to talk about?
2. Which side of the issue do I support?
3. Who is my intended audience? And how do I make it relevant to them?
4. What arguments would be most convincing to my readers?
5. What supporting information will I include?
6. How do I best use topic-specific vocabulary to enhance my speech?
7. How do I prepare counter-argument(s) to better persuade people?

Drafting your ideas down:

  • Use a variety of sources to gather ideas/arguments on the issue
  • Use a graphic organizer (refer to class notes) to organize your ideas and supporting details
Speech:
  • use language to appeal to people's emotions
  • use your voice to grab and hold audience's attention
  • use gestures to emphasize important ideas
  • constant eye contact with the audience to let them know you are speaking to them directly

Presentation dates: Tuesday, June 10th and Thursdays, June
