Science - Unit C Project outline

 Science Unit C Project:
Understanding Impacts of Pure Substances and Mixtures

Purpose:
Pure substances and mixtures have many applications in our world – from day-to-day living, such as flours for bread or salting the roads in winter, to large-scale industrial uses like refining crude oil for gasoline or mining for precious metals.
These technologies all have impacts on our society  - socially, environmentally, and economically. (For reference, read Section 9.2.]

You task is to learn about real-life applications of pure substances and mixtures and to inform others of the various implications these technologies have on society.

Direction:
1.     In groups of 2-3 students, choose a topic from the list below.
2.     Conduct research about your topic and implications of the technologies involved.
3.     Prepare an oral presentation (approximately 5 minutes) to share your findings.

Available Topics:
A.     Coal Mining
B.     Air filter/purification
C.     Pesticides
D.    Recycling plants
E.     Nuclear Energy (usage and disposal)
F.     Bottled water
G.     Oil Refineries
H.    Salt on the road
I.      Access to clean water in developing countries

In your presentation, make sure you include the following:
·      Description of the use and application of technology (including purpose of the technology)
·      Implications of the technology; choose any two areas of implication: environmental, social, and/or economics
·      If applicable, provide alternatives to minimize negative impacts
Effective use of multimedia AND creativity are strongly encouraged.

Available Presentation Dates:

Tuesday, April 15                  Wednesday, April 16                                    Thursday, April 17
